RENO, Nev. (AP) — State health officials say the first case of enterovirus D68 has been identified in Nevada.
The state Division of Public and Behavioral Health said Wednesday that a person in Washoe County has the virus, which is associated with severe respiratory illness.
Nevada is one of the last states the virus has reached. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it's confirmed more than 1,100 cases in 47 states and the District of Columbia between mid-August and early December.
The virus can cause a fever and sneezing, or more severe symptoms including wheezing and difficulty breathing. It's most likely to hit infants, children and teenagers.
Health officials say the virus is usually transmitted during the summer and fall, so the infection season is winding down.
