RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A new report says University of Richmond President Edward L. Ayers is among three dozen presidents of private colleges and universities who earned more than $1 million in 2012.
Ayers' compensation is ranked 35th in a survey of the 500 private schools with the largest endowments. The survey was conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
The Chronicle's report says Ayers' total compensation in 2012 was $1,008,770.
University of Richmond spokeswoman Cynthia Price tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1D39wZ9 ) that The Chronicle's reported compensation included the value of the president's home and expenses. She says it also included a one-time payout of deferred compensation earned over the preceding five years.
The Chronicle's analysis calculated the annual compensation using base salary, bonuses, other reportable compensation and nontaxable benefits.
