A sale of tribal art from Africa, Oceania and North America held in Paris fetched nearly nine million euros (11 million dollars), Sotheby's said Saturday, adding that it was a record for the auction house.

Five different pieces sold on Friday made world records, including an Urhobo statue bought for 1,132,000 euros, and a Bangwa statue from Cameroon for 975,200, three times the estimate.

Sotheby's said the lots came largely from the collections of Nicole and John Dintenfass, Roger Vanthournout, Andrea Portago and Helmut Zake.

The sale coincided with the opening this week in Paris of an eye-catching new museum devoted to tribal arts, the Musee du Quai Branly, which houses some 300,000 objects from Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
