OSTERSUND, Sweden (AP) — Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen won the men's 20K individual race at a biathlon World Cup event on Wednesday.

Svendsen, who won Olympic gold in the 15K mass start and the mixed relay at the Sochi Games earlier this year, shot cleanly and finished with a time of 53 minutes, 25.6 seconds.

Ukrainian Serhiy Semenov missed one target and finished second, 1:17.6 off the pace.

Michal Slesingr of the Czech Republic was third after also missing one target, finishing 2:08.3 behind Svendsen.

Pre-race favorite Martin Fourcade, who led France to victory in the mixed relay on Sunday, finished ninth.

The season's opening World Cup meet continues on Thursday with the women's individual 15K race.
