BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Broadmoor High School biology teacher Crystal Gordon has been named one of five winners of an annual national teaching award given out by the National Education Association.
The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1BaT4nU ) the NEA Foundation's Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence brings with it $10,000 for the Baton Rouge educator and a trip to the nation's capital.
Other teachers from Montana, South Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin also won the award.
Gordon will be honored at the foundation's annual gala on Feb. 13 in Washington, D.C.
The foundation's president and CEO, Harriet Sanford, said Tuesday that Gordon was selected by her peers because she "attained the highest teaching standards, as shown by her exemplary instruction, advocacy for the profession, attention to diversity, leadership in professional development, and engagement of parents and community."
