SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Rescuers are searching for 52 people who are missing after a South Korean fishing boat sank in the Bering Sea. An official says at least one person is dead. The South Korean fisheries and oceans ministry says seven crew members have been rescued and one body has been recovered, but weather and water conditions are complicating the search for the others.
BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses and police say twin blasts have exploded in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, in a crowded market where two suicide bombers killed 70 people a week ago. One man working in the market says he saw people dripping with blood and some missing limbs today. Police say it's too early to give a death toll. There's no immediate claim of responsibility but people are blaming Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM'), the Islamic extremist group that has carried out many such attacks in a 5-year insurgency that has killed thousands.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan's president plans over the next several months to replace officials in the country's most volatile provinces — the five that have had some areas under Taliban control for years. Recent insurgent attacks have put under pressure President Ashraf Ghani's administration which earlier this month ordered a top-to-bottom review of the country's military and security strategy. Following a string of recent attacks targeting foreigners, Kabul's police chief stepped down, but a police spokesman says the Interior Ministry has rejected the resignation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama plans today to meet with his Cabinet, civil rights leaders and law enforcement officials to discuss the situation in Ferguson, Missouri. Last week, sometimes violent protests erupted after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of a black 18-year-old. Obama also plans to meet with young civil rights leaders to discuss the mistrust between many communities of color and law enforcement.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A campus vigil has been held for an Ohio State football player who police say appears to have shot himself to death after sending his parents a text message that concussions had messed up his head. Twenty-two-year-old Kosta Karageorge's body was found Sunday in a dumpster. He had been missing since Wednesday.
