ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein had the fastest time for Mercedes on the second day of Formula One post-season testing on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old German clocked a best lap of 1 minute, 42.62 seconds, completing 96 laps on the Yas Marina circuit, where Lewis Hamilton clinched his second F1 title on Sunday ahead of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.
Wehrlein was well clear of Ferrari's reserve driver, 19-year-old Raffaele Marciello, who recorded a best lap of 1:43.208. Dutch driver Max Verstappen was third quickest in 1:43.763.
The 17-year-old Verstappen will drive for Toro Rosso in next year's F1 championship.
It was a tough day for McLaren, which is testing its new Honda power unit, as Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne completed only two laps and failed to set a time.
