MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A northern Iowa school district has voted to demolish a 91-year-old former elementary school.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1zxKzQ9 ) the Mason City Board of Education unanimously voted on Monday night to destroy the building after an unsuccessful attempt to sell it.

The city received two bids to purchase the former Madison Elementary school for about $11,000. School officials say the board declined to sell the building because of legal concerns about the bids. They say the building would have cost about $1.4 million to restore.

Officials say it will likely cost more than $220,000 to demolish the building and that demolition should begin during the winter.
