FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A new barcode scanner system to sign in visitors or turn unwanted people away is being rolled out in Fort Wayne schools.
The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1EGJk3W ) the district started using the system at its administration building in April and plans to install it in all school buildings.
Regular visitors who complete an online background check will be issued ID badges that they will scan to gain entry. Occasional visitors will need to wave a driver's license over a scanner so a computer can check national sex-offender registries and determine whether the user has been banned from that building.
The system then prints an ID badge and logs the time of entry.
Spokeswoman Krista Stockman says the system will be installed in eight of 50 school buildings in January.
