I am planning a trip to Orlando in late summer. When does the hurricane season die down for FL?

What is the chance of being caught in a hurricane the last part of August or first part of September?

Thanks Anna

The magical world of Disney does sit in a hot spot for hurricanes and of course lots of thunderstorms too. Florida is the lightning capital of the US. But, as with any southern destination you run the chance of the weather getting nasty this summer.

Hurricane season runs from June through November. Since you asked about your chance of being hit by a Hurricane (winds of 74 mph and greater) we'll deal with those chances but also look at other named storms. Remember, storms get a name at tropical storm stage, and those can cause plenty of damage.

According to National Hurricane Center, for central Florida in September the chances of being hit by a named Hurricane is around 5%. In August about 2 percent. But if you check August for any type of named storm, central Florida has about a 7 to 8 percent chance and in September a 10% chance.

I wouldn't cancel your trip based on these numbers but certainly watch the forecasts for that area before you leave since you won't want to be stuck there if something bad is going to happen. Several hurricanes slammed into Florida in 2004. The peak month for hurricanes is in September so stay alert of the latest weather info for your destination.
