SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Four married same-sex couples who sued Utah for not granting them benefits are asking the court to make the state pay nearly $200,000 in attorney fees. The Deseret News reports the Utah Attorney General's Office considers the request unreasonable. Utah has already spent $600,000 on outside attorneys brought in to defend the law.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (AP) — A former nanny who admitted to abusing a 1-year-old child she was caring for has been sentenced to six months in jail. A state judge also ruled that 22-year-old Traci Omer must pay a $1,000 fine and serve three years on probation after finishing her jail term. According to court records, Omer admitted the abuse in a letter to the family.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man is accused of threatening his teenage daughter with a rifle during an argument that began over a game of Battleship. Police say the 68-year-old man was with his 17-year-old daughter when he accused her of cheating and broke the game. The Deseret News reports the father was arrested.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Buoyed by an improving economy and renewed buzz about Utah's ski scene thanks to Vail Resort's recent purchase of the state's largest resort, ski officials are expecting one of the best seasons in recent memory when lifts turn on later this month. Nathan Rafferty of Ski Utah said if the snowfall is good, the state can break the record for skier and snowboard days.
