ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux plans to resumes riding Sunday, exactly a month after he broke five ribs and bruised his lung in a pre-race accident.
The 44-year-old jockey said Thursday he's glad to resume the sport that he loves.
Desormeaux credits a safety vest for saving his life. The vest is made from materials similar to those used in bulletproof vests.
The jockey was injured during the post parade on Sept. 28 when his mount, a 2-year-old filly entered in her first race, reared and unseated him. He tried to remount, but was kicked by the filly's hind leg, sending him reeling backward about 10 feet.
Desormeaux is a three-time Kentucky Derby winner who returned to riding full-time in Southern California in May.
