LONDON, Jun 20, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- An English woman has been sentenced to almost three years in prison for infecting her boyfriend with the virus that causes AIDS.
Prosecutors said that Sarah Jane Porter, a receptionist at the Vidal Sassoon hair salon in London, told her boyfriend that he had infected her, The Independent reported. He was so upset that he tried to take his own life.
"Your victim was devastated that a person whom he loved and respected -- you -- had lied to him time and time again by your words and actions," Judge Quentin Campbell told Porter as he imposed the 32-month sentence. "Your cruelty and dishonesty made him feel worthless."
Police were alerted to Porter by another man who said that she had tried to get him to have unprotected sex. He said he later found out she was HIV positive.
Her home was searched after she refused to identify people she might have infected, leading investigators to the boyfriend involved in the criminal case, a dance promoter and disc jockey.
