The blue-chip index lost close to 2 percent, dropping nearly 335 points just a day after registering its biggest gain of the year. The S&P fell 40 points, while the Nasdaq dropped 90, both losses of about 2 percent. Energy stocks led the slide as the price of oil continued to slump, with benchmark U.S. crude closing below $86 barrel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials say the barrage of cruise missiles aimed at a Syrian terrorist cell last month killed just one or two key militants. The officials say the strikes on a compound near Aleppo did not deal a crippling blow to the Khorasan Group, and the veteran al-Qaida fighters are still believed to be plotting attacks against U.S. and European targets.

MONROVIA, Liberia — West African leaders are pleading with the world to send money, doctors and nurses to help them fight the Ebola outbreak which has now killed more than 3,800 people in their overwhelmed countries. Meanwhile in Dallas, health officials say a deputy sheriff who entered the apartment of a family hosting an infected man has tested negative.

APPLEGATE, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews are battling to keep a series of small wildfires that have already destroyed five Northern California homes from getting into a canyon where dry brush and trees could cause it to take off. Officials say the fires, about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, are threatening hundreds of homes around the community of Applegate. The fires are about 20 percent contained.

YUCCA VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California high school student has been arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot, stab and assault staff members at his high school in the community of Yucca Valley. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says staff members at Black Rock High School reported the threat and detectives searching the 18-year-old's home in Twentynine Palms found firearms, hundreds of rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition, hunting knives, swords, hatchets and crossbows.
