DALLAS (AP) — A little more than a week after he was admitted to a Dallas hospital, a Liberian man infected with Ebola has died. Doctors at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital initially sent Thomas Eric Duncan home even though he was showing symptoms and said he had been in West Africa. At the same hospital, a deputy who went into the apartment where Duncan had stayed has been hospitalized. Health officials say there's no indication he had any direct contact with Duncan.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the U.S. will keep making progress against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. Speaking at the Pentagon, Obama said he's encouraged to see a broad international consensus has emerged. Obama says the world has come to the conclusion that the group has to be dealt with because of what he calls "their barbaric behavior."
WASHINGTON (AP) — A nonpartisan congressional study shows that new voter identification laws have reduced election turnout and had a disproportionate effect on blacks and younger people. As of June, 33 states had enacted laws obligating voters to show a photo ID at the polls. Republicans say that requirement will reduce fraud. Democrats insist the laws are a GOP effort to reduce Democratic turnout on Election Day.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Casino workers have blocked traffic on a highway in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to protest demands for contract givebacks being made to keep the Trump Taj Mahal casino open. Police said about 24 protesters who sat down in a major intersection were arrested when they refused to move. Trump Entertainment Resorts is threatening to close the Taj Mahal on Nov. 13 unless the union agrees to give up its pension plan and health insurance. It also wants tax breaks and state aid.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has grounded its entire fleet of air tankers because of yesterday's crash of one of the planes. It went down while battling a wildfire in Yosemite National Park, killing the pilot. The grounding left the park service with a single contract helicopter to assist firefighters tackling the blaze.
