LOGAN — Utah State senior quarterback Chuckie Keeton will likely miss the remainder of the 2014 season, Aggie head coach Matt Wells announced Wednesday evening.
Keeton, who had surgery to repair torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee during the offseason, re-aggravated the injury in the first half of the Aggies' 36-24 home win over Wake Forest on Sept. 13. He has not been cleared by medical staff to return to competition.
The senior from Houston, Texas, has not used a redshirt during his time at Utah State.
Through two-and-a-half games in 2014, Keeton completd 51 of 92 passes for 426 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Keeton did not play in Utah State's 21-14 overtime loss at Arkansas State last week, and backup quarterback Darell Garretson threw for 268 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 27 of 46 passing. The Aggies (2-2) play at BYU (4-0) on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in a game televised by ESPN.
"Chuckie's health is our top priority and he has not been cleared by the medical staff," Wells said in a statement issued by the school. "We will continue to monitor his progress throughout the fall, but given his current condition it is unlikely that he will play in any games in the foreseeable future."
Keeton injured his knee against BYU a year ago, and Utah State went 6-2 with Garretson as the starting quarterback in 2013. The Aggies advanced to the inaugural Mountain West Conference championship game, which they lost 24-17 to Fresno State. Utah State rebounded with a 21-14 win against No. 24 Northern Illinois in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl in December.
In his career, Keeton ranks second in Utah State school history in completion percentage with 65.4 percent, second in touchdown passes with 58, second in completions with 568, third in total offense with 7,621 yards, third with 6,387 passing yards and 20th with 1,234 rushing yards.
