DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Airstrikes against the Islamic State militants in Syria haven't prevented deadly clashes overnight near Syria's border with Turkey. Activists say dozens of militants and Kurdish fighters were killed. And they say Islamic State fighters have beheaded nine Kurdish fighters, including three women, who were captured during the fighting. Meanwhile, twin bombings near a school in central Syria have left at least 17 people dead, including 10 children.

HONG KONG (AP) — The next move by pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong could be an occupation of government buildings. They're warning that they will take that action if the territory's leader doesn't resign by the end of the day tomorrow. The protesters are opposing a decision by China's government that candidates for Hong Kong's elections in 2017 must be approved by a mostly pro-China committee.

WASHINGTON (AP) — There's an upbeat jobs report today from the payroll processer ADP. It says businesses added 213,000 jobs in September, boosting hiring for the sixth month in a row. The figures indicate that the government's monthly jobs report on Friday could reveal a rebound in hiring.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are heading lower in early trading, putting the market on course for its third loss in a row. General Mills fell 1 percent after the company said it would cut up to 800 jobs, the second time it's reduced its work force in a month. The company is struggling as Americans eat fewer boxed and frozen meals.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — No charges are expected, in the case of a six-year-old boy who police say had been pointing two toy cap guns at other children on a school bus in northeastern Ohio yesterday morning. The bus driver alerted police, who boarded the bus and seized the Western-style cap guns. Police tell the Akron Beacon Journal that some of the children were shaken up. Police took turned the boy over to his parents.
