SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Administrators at an upstate New York college have canceled an annual Halloween-themed party because of excessive drinking and drug use by students.
The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (http://bit.ly/1mPzisy ) that officials at Skidmore College sent a letter to the student newspaper last week explaining their decision to deny approval for the Moorebid Ball, a raucous late-October event held on the Saratoga Springs campus in recent years.
The private, liberal arts college took steps last year to tone down the party, but five students landed in the hospital. In 2010, nine students were treated at Saratoga Hospital for excessive alcohol consumption.
One administrator says too many students were using drugs and alcohol "to fuel a night of no-rules and destructive actions."
The party was one of Skidmore's most popular, sometimes drawing upward of 1,000 students.
