PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The United Way of Rhode Island is working with the Liberian Ministerial Fellowship of Rhode Island, the American Red Cross and local residents with ties to West Africa to respond to the Ebola outbreak.
The United Way says the groups will collect donations through Oct. 31 to support the West Africa Ebola Outbreak Fund.
The American Red Cross will use the money from the fund to help Red Cross societies in the region manage the outbreak, assist with the epidemiological investigation and educate the public about virus prevention.
The state's Nigerian community will celebrate the anniversary of Nigeria's independence Wednesday to Sunday. Organizers say they plan to collect and donate supplies to combat the spread of the disease, such as hand sanitizer and masks, at the event.
