BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Police are reminding residents to vaccinate their pets against rabies and to avoid wild animals after a man was bitten by a rabid skunk in a wooded area of Burlington.

The man killed the skunk, which later tested positive for the disease.

Police say he went to the emergency department of Fletcher Allen Health Care on Saturday but declined to be treated.

After the animal was tested, police searched for the man, who is reported to be homeless. He was taken the emergency room for treatment.
