WASHINGTON (AP) — Secret Service Director Julia Pierson is telling lawmakers she takes full responsibility for the serious breach of the White House mansion eight days ago. That's when an Army veteran with a knife climbed the fence and made his way well into the executive mansion before he was tackled. Pierson also told a House panel there have been six fence-jumpers this year alone, including one just eight days before that intrusion.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A man who shot and killed a 17-year-old teenager after an argument over loud music outside a Florida convenience store says he feared for his life when he opened fire. Michael Dunn took the stand as the second witness called by his defense team. He is on trial for first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Jordan Davis of Marietta, Georgia, in November 2012. Dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted second-degree murder in February and already faces at least 60 years in prison. The jury in the first trial deadlocked on the first-degree murder count.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A man accused of abducting and killing a real estate agent in rural Arkansas has pleaded not guilty to preliminary charges of kidnapping and capital murder. Arron Lewis appeared in court this morning. The body of Beverly Carter was found overnight in a shallow grave at a concrete company where, according to a newspaper report, Lewis formerly worked. Carter had been missing since Thursday, when she told her husband she planned to show a home to a prospective buyer.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The NFL says Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah should not have been penalized for dropping to his knees in prayer in the end zone after an interception. An NFL spokesman says there should be no flag when a player "goes to the ground as part of religious expression." The flag thrown in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 41-14 victory over New England last night touched off a firestorm on social media, with many wondering how it was different from players dropping to one knee in Christian prayer.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumer confidence has slipped a bit, after hitting the highest level in nearly seven years. The Conference Board says its index declined in September after four months of gains. Economists say the decline reflected a less positive view of the current state of the job market.
