DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit judge says even though water is necessary in order to sustain life, that doesn't mean there's a "right to free and affordable water" -- at least a right that would be enforceable in court. The judge today said he doesn't have the ability to stop the city of Detroit from shutting off water if people can't pay their bills. Even the United Nations criticized the city over the water cutoffs. But the judge said the bankrupt city can't afford to lose any more revenue.
WASHINGTON (AP) — There's some welcome evidence today that the economy is on solid footing heading into the final quarter of the year. The government says consumer spending in August rose by one-half of one percent from July. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity, and a lackluster showing in July had raised concerns about whether the economy was losing momentum.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have been recovering from an early-morning slide. The market has turned choppy in recent weeks, flipping between solid gains and steep losses. Since hitting a record two weeks ago, the S&P 500 has slipped 1.4 percent.
KISO, Japan (AP) — Rescue workers in Japan have had to call off the search for more victims of Saturday's eruption of a volcano. They had found five more bodies near the summit of the volcano, bringing the death toll to 36. Survivors told Japanese media that they were pelted by rocks from the eruption.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Eastern Ukraine has seen its worst violence in more than a week. Officials say fighting between pro-Russian rebels and government troops has killed at least 12 people and wounded 32. Violence has continued despite a cease-fire that was declared more than three weeks ago.
