UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Syria's foreign minister says U.S. actions in his country are just going to lead to more violence and terrorism. He told the U.N. General Assembly today that the policy of striking at one group of militants while providing money, weapons and training to others creates a "fertile ground" for the continued growth of extremism. He also says airstrikes won't be enough to destroy the Islamic State group.
HONG KONG (AP) — Police in Hong Kong are defending their use of tear gas and other tactics to control the protests that have paralyzed the city's financial district. And they are appealing to the thousands of pro-democracy protesters to stop the unprecedented mass act of civil disobedience -- for the sake of safety and stability. The use of tear gas yesterday appears to have backfired, judging from the growing crowds today.
ATLANTA (AP) — Prosecutors say 12 former Atlanta Public Schools educators and administrators cheated on student tests, lied and stole as part of a widespread conspiracy that affected thousands of students. Opening statements are under way in the trial of the former administrators and teachers on racketeering charges first announced more than a year ago. Former Superintendent Beverly Hall isn't among them; her trial was delayed because of breast cancer treatment.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Real estate sales may remain sluggish in the next few months. The National Association of Realtors says fewer Americans signed contracts to buy homes in August. Higher prices and weak wage growth have limited buying.
VENICE, Italy (AP) —This time, it counted. George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin (AH'-muhl ah-luh-muh-DEEN') celebrated a civil ceremony today in a historic palace in Venice -- two days after tying the knot in a private ceremony attended by Hollywood celebrity friends and family. Today's civil procedure is required under Italian law.
