LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials have announced the southern Nevada winner of a $4,500 memorial scholarship named after the late Gov. Kenny Guinn.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas senior Tara Leigh Myl was named the winner during a Monday ceremony on campus. Myl is a 2010 graduate of Green Valley High School who is majoring in education with an emphasis in math and science.

The scholarship is awarded to one education student in the north and one student in the south each year. University of Nevada, Reno senior Devan Gaddis was awarded one of the prizes earlier this month.

The scholarship provides money beyond what students already receive as part of Nevada's Millennium Scholarship.

Guinn's family says the scholarship is a symbol of the love the former governor had for Nevada and education.
