PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is holding its annual AIDS Walk for Life to raise awareness of the disease and funds for education, prevention and other services for those affected.
Saturday's 2.5-mile walk begins and ends at the Statehouse in Providence.
A speaking program on the steps of the Statehouse will precede the walk, which is in its 29th year. Among the speakers is David Gonsalves, an activist in the HIV-AIDS community on research and prevention who has been HIV-positive since 1984. Rhode Island College President Nancy Carriuolo and U.S. Rep. David Cicilline will also deliver remarks.
Proceeds from the walk benefit AIDS Project RI, which provides education, prevention and testing programs and other services for those living with HIV and AIDS.
Free, rapid HIV testing will be available at the event.
