KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Jarkko Nieminen of Finland upset third-seeded Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Nieminen won without facing a break point and will next face seventh-seeded Pablo Andujar of Spain, who beat Michal Przysiezny of Poland 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
The 28-year-old Andujar is bidding to win his second ATP World Tour title of the season after victory on clay in Gstaad.
Benjamin Becker of Germany defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 7-6 (4) in 84 minutes. Becker, who upset defending champion Joao Sousa in the first round, will play second-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who outlasted German qualifier Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1.
