France may expand airstrikes...Suspect in custody...Big Powerball winner

PARIS (AP) — France had already joined U.S. airstrikes over Iraq -- but now it's considering whether to extend those attacks into Syria. This, after militants linked to the Islamic State group beheaded a French hostage. French officials say they'll "intensify" their support for Syrian opposition forces fighting the Islamic State extremists. Meanwhile, France is increasing security in public places and on public transport.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A man charged with abducting a missing University of Virginia student is in custody in Texas and has appeared briefly via video link before a county judge. Jesse Matthew was arrested yesterday on a beach near Galveston. He's accused of abducting Hannah Graham, an 18-year-old sophomore who went missing Sept. 13 in Charlottesville. In Texas, he's charged with being a fugitive from justice and with giving false information to an officer. Police are still searching for Graham.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are slightly lower this morning, following their best day in a month. Shares in Apple fell 1 percent after the company pulled a software update for its iPhones late yesterday. Users had complained that they weren't able to make calls.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits is showing an increase, after falling sharply two weeks ago. But the applications are still at a level indicating that hiring will remain healthy. One economist says when measured as a share of payrolls, the claims are "close to all-time lows."

SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) — A lucky person in Northern California has won a $225 million Powerball jackpot. The California Lottery says in a tweet that the winner in San Mateo, south of San Francisco, matched all six numbers in last night's drawing. Lottery officials say it is the sole winning ticket sold in the 44 states that carry Powerball.
