WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says the U.S. and its Arab allies are launching more airstrikes into Syria against Islamic State militants. The strikes are a continuation of the broader military campaign that began Monday against the militant group. Four Arab nations — Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and United Arab Emirates — participated in those strikes, and Qatar supported them.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') says the terrorists who beheaded a French citizen in Algeria are a global threat. Hollande spoke at the U.N. today shortly after learning of the man's death. A video shows Algerian extremists allied with the Islamic State group decapitating a hostage after France ignored a demand to stop airstrikes in Iraq.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Police say they have arrested five people in Ferguson, Missouri, after protests over the death of an unarmed black 18-year-old again intensified. Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson says it isn't clear if a fire at a makeshift memorial for Michael Brown led to more violence Tuesday. Brown was shot by white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9.
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (AP) — A military judge has recommended a 20-year prison sentence for a Missouri drill sergeant found guilty of sexually assaulting and harassing several female soldiers. Army Staff Sgt. Angel M. Sanchez was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault and six counts of abusive sexual contact. The verdict came this afternoon at a court-martial.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple has stopped providing an update to its new iOS 8 mobile operating software, following complaints that the update interferes with users' ability to make phone calls. The iOS 8.0.1 update released this morning was intended to fix some earlier glitches in the new software for iPhones and iPads that Apple released last week.
