UNITED NATIONS (AP) — France's president is confirming the death of a French hostage held by an extremist group in Algeria. The group had said after abducting Herve Gourdel Sunday that he would be killed within 24 hours unless France stopped its airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq. A video released by a U.S. terrorism watchdog shows the extremists decapitating a hostage.
LONDON (AP) — British lawmakers will be considering a request from Iraq's government to support air strikes against Islamic State extremists. Prime Minister David Cameron's office says Parliament is being recalled to debate Britain's response. The move came after Cameron met with the Iraqi prime minister in New York. Meanwhile, the Netherlands will be sending six F-16 jets to join the coalition fighting the Islamic State.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Senate Republican is holding up money to fight Ebola. Jim Inhofe (IHN'-hahf) of Oklahoma says he wants the White House to provide details on how the military will protect U.S. personnel who are sent to Africa to battle the epidemic. The administration has submitted two requests totaling $1 billion -- money that would come from other programs.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Five people have been arrested after the latest protests in Ferguson, Missouri, over the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer last month. Authorities say it's not clear whether a fire yesterday at a makeshift memorial for Brown led to last night's unrest, which included reports of smashed windows and possible arson. They say two law enforcement officers were hurt.
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) — Prosecutors in upstate New York say a grand jury has finished hearing testimony regarding NASCAR driver Tony Stewart's role in the on-track death of sprint car driver Kevin Ward last month. The grand jury's decision will be announced this afternoon. Ward was killed after climbing from his car to confront Stewart following a crash.
