PROVO — The BYU Cougars announced a four-game football series with UMass on Wednesday. The series will begin in 2016 and will be the first time that the two programs will meet in football.
BYU will host the Minutemen in Provo on Oct. 8, 2016 and Nov. 18, 2017. The Cougars will then play UMass at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, home of the New England Patriots, on Nov. 10, 2018, and Nov. 23, 2019.
By the time the first game is played in 2016, UMass will be a football independent just like BYU. That is something that appealed to Cougar Athletic Director Tom Holmoe.
“With UMass joining BYU as an independent football program in 2016, this series makes a lot of sense for both schools,” Holmoe said. “It will be a great experience for our team to play at Gillette Stadium — home of the New England Patriots — in front of the BYU faithful in that part of the country.”
