CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a 21-year-old inmate who had been serving a robbery sentence died in a Carson City hospital after spending two months there. Prison officials say Lawrence Howard died of a chronic medical condition Monday at Carson Tahoe Hospital. He had been there since July 15. Howard was serving a sentence of four to 12 years after being convicted in Clark County of robbery with a deadly weapon.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a murder charge against a 16-year-old North Las Vegas high school junior. The youth is free after prosecutors received a video showing he was in a convenience store at the time of a fatal shooting in a different area. Police are investigating the Sept. 5 fatal shooting of 20-year-old Andrea Lafon.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County school board has voted to buy out the contract of School Superintendent Pedro Martinez to end months of legal and political wrangling sparked by his initial firing in July. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the board voted to purchase the remainder of Martinez' contract for $800,000.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 30-year-old southern Nevada man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for pointing a blue laser light at a Las Vegas police helicopter in January. James Zipf pleaded guilty in June. The judge also ordered him to serve three years of supervised release and get mental health and substance abuse treatment.
