LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee says a man who was racing a Porsche on a rural highway may have been distracted moments before he crashed. Lee says the death of 71-year-old Philip Bowser of San Jose is being ruled an accident. Bowser's 44-year-old daughter, Amy Bowser, was in the passenger seat, but survived.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — For the second day in a row, the National Weather Service has issued a "dense smoke advisory" for Reno and much of the Sierra's eastern front. Smoky haze from a California wildfire nearly 100 miles away continues to push air quality into the unhealthy range.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A judge is recommending that the Washoe County School Board buy out the contract of Superintendent Pedro Martinez because relations between the two parties have soured so much. Martinez was fired in July, but later allowed to return to his job. He sued the board after the attorney general ruled the board violated open meetings laws when they fired him.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — State regulators want NV Energy to turn over data on smart meter failures as they launch a preliminary investigation into whether they pose any fire danger. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported last week that fire investigators had documented nine fires in Reno and Sparks since 2012 that they say originated at the smart meters.
