WASHINGTON (AP) — The Islamic State group isn't the only target for U.S. warplanes in Syria. U.S. Central Command says American warplanes launched eight unilateral airstrikes "to disrupt the imminent attack plotting against the United States and Western interests" by a network of "seasoned al-Qaida veterans." Earlier, the U.S. and five Arab countries launched airstrikes on Islamic State group targets in eastern Syria.

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli defense official speaking on condition of anonymity says the Syrian plane shot down by Israel today was a MIG fighter jet. Military officials aren't officially confirming the type of aircraft but say the plane infiltrated its airspace over the Golan Heights and was hit by missiles from a Patriot air defense system. Israeli leaders appear increasingly nervous about side effects from the Syrian civil war.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel says a breakthrough about a week ago led to the West Bank hideout where two Palestinians suspected in the June abduction and slaying of three Israeli teenagers were killed today in a special forces raid. The killing of the teens had triggered a chain of events that led to the war in Gaza this summer. Israeli forces had been pursuing the suspects since the abductions.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government's own watchdogs have issued a mixed cybersecurity report card on the HealthCare.gov website. A report from the Health and Human Services Department inspector general says so-called "white hat" attempts to hack the website earlier this year found a critical vulnerability — but the health insurance site's security features also earned some respect for blocking attempts to exploit the weakness.

GAUHATI, India (AP) — A remote northeastern part of India has been inundated by two days of heavy rain that triggered deadly landslides and flash floods. Officials say at least 28 people have died and more rain is forecast in the region where more than 150,000 people have been asked to leave their homes for higher ground. The area is flood-prone during the monsoon season.
