SYDNEY (AP) — A hospital in Western Australia said on Tuesday it was testing a patient for suspected Ebola.
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth said in a statement it had one patient being tested for the virus, which has been blamed for about 2,800 deaths throughout West Africa in the worst Ebola outbreak in history.
A spokeswoman said the hospital had already seen one other suspected case, but it turned out not to be the disease. She declined to release further details about the current patient due to confidentiality rules.
"At present, the risk of people with Ebola virus disease travelling to Australia is considered to be very low," the hospital said in a statement.
There have been no confirmed Ebola cases in Australia from the recent outbreak in Africa, which has sickened more than 5,800 people. Two weeks ago, a hospital in Queensland state said it was treating a patient for suspected Ebola, but later determined the man did not have the virus.
