BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts authorities say they've been told that three Afghan National Army officers who went missing during a training exercise are in custody at the Canadian border. They say federal authorities are interviewing the officers at Niagara Falls. Military officials say the Afghan soldiers had been participating in a U.S. Central Command Regional Cooperation training exercise at Joint Base Cape Cod. They arrived at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts on Sept. 11, and were last seen Saturday at a shopping mall in Hyannis. Officials have said they had no reason to believe the soldiers posed any danger to the public.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Authorities are again searching the apartment of a man they believe is the last person seen with a University of Virginia student before she disappeared. A Charlottesville city spokeswoman says police returned today with a new search warrant at the apartment of 32-year-old Jesse Matthew. His apartment was first searched Friday morning. Matthew is being sought on arrest warrants charging him with reckless driving, but authorities also say they want to talk to him about 18-year-old Hannah Graham, who has been missing since Sept. 13. He hasn't been charged in the disappearance.

UNDATED (AP) — A new survey from the Pew Research Center indicates American support for gay marriage could be leveling off. The study's authors say it's too soon to draw any definitive conclusion. But the new poll released today found a 5 percentage point drop since February in Americans who want legal recognition for same-sex relationships. Last month, 49 percent of Americans said last month they support same-sex marriage, compared to 54 percent in February.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's water department is defending its policy of cutting off service to people with unpaid bills. It says continuing to provide free service to those households could be "very devastating" to the department's budget. An attorney for the water department told a judge today that "humanitarian concerns are very compelling," but that so is fairness. After thousands of shutoffs earlier this year, there were protests and appeals -- including one to the United Nations.

WEST MILFORD, N.J. (AP) — There are as many as 2,400 bears living in the forests of northern New Jersey -- but officials say the death of a hiker yesterday was the first fatal bear attack on record in the state. They say a 300-pound male bear who was believed to have killed the hiker was circling the victim when sheriff's officers and wildlife officials killed it. The 22-year-old victim was hiking with four friends when the bear began following them. They split up and ran, and the victim's body was found two hours later.
