CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Workers at Metro Animal Control in Casper say they believe they have a handle on a feline virus that caused them to euthanize nearly 80 cats since mid-August.

Shelter manager Tory Cutrell says panleukopenia (pan-loo-kuh-PEE'-nee-uh) is a highly transmittable and deadly virus. It causes vomiting and the destruction of white blood cells.

Cutrell tells KCWY-TV (http://bit.ly/1rgU6ba ) that after the virus was confirmed, a veterinarian recommended euthanizing any cats that had symptoms rather than have the virus spread throughout the shelter.

She says they vaccinated cats and watched for any signs and symptoms of the disease.

Shelter staff say they are confident any cats that were adopted in the past month were vaccinated and should be healthy. The shelter still has cats and kittens in need of homes.
