RENO, Nev. (AP) — Federal forecasters say severe drought or worse will continue into next year across much of the West, including parts of western Utah, most of Nevada and practically all of California. The National Weather Service is predicting below-normal precipitation and normal or above-normal temperatures in the week ahead, and experts say the three-year drought isn't likely to be relieved in October, November and December.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say one Utah Highway Patrol trooper jumped over a retaining wall to escape serious injury when a speeding vehicle driven by a man who sideswiped a patrol vehicle at an Interstate 15 crash scene. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. David Moreno tells KSL-TV troopers were investigating an accident Saturday afternoon when a vehicle sped toward them, swerved and sideswiped the parked patrol vehicle.

OREM, Utah (AP) — The Utah Highway Patrol says three women were hospitalized, four other people received minor injuries and a horse was euthanized after a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a pickup hauling a horse trailer on Interstate 15 near Orem. Trooper Evan Kirby tells the Deseret News the women were in a vehicle that struck a concrete barrier and was then hit by the pickup and trailer about 11 a.m. yesterday.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State officials say Utah unemployment figures remained unchanged at 3.6 percent in August. Gov. Gary R. Herbert says the Department of Workforce Services figures released this week, plus a state fiscal surplus this year, show that conservative fiscal policies are working.
