Eastern Washington opens Big Sky season with win over Montana State

OGDEN — Conference play has finally found the Big Sky.

After weeks of facing FBS opponents, every conference squad faced an FCS opponent except for two. Defending conference champion Eastern Washington got the week’s marquee win as the Eagles outlasted the Montana State Bobcats, 52-51.

The other conference game included a matchup between Cal Poly and Portland State. The Mustangs bludgeoned the Vikings 42-14 as Cal Poly’s 531 yards of offense overwhelmed the Portland State defense.

Top-ranked North Dakota State faced its second Big Sky team of the season, hosting Montana. The Grizzlies fell to the Bison, 22-10, as NDSU’s John Crockett rushed 28 times for 144 yards.

Weber State fell to Southland Conference member Stephen F. Austin, 35-20, in Texas. The Wildcats turned the ball over three times. Also, Missouri Valley member South Dakota bested Northern Arizona, 28-21. The Coyotes held a 20-0 halftime lead. Also, Northern Colorado fell to Northern Iowa, 46-7.


Eastern Washington and Cal Poly opened conference play with victories, as they beat Montana State and Portland State, respectively.

North Dakota picked up its second victory of the season, beating Stony Brook of the Colonial Athletic Association, 13-3.

In non-FCS action, Sacramento State beat Menlo College, 59-14. The Hornets move to 3-1 on the season. Also, Southern Utah fell to Fresno State, 56-16.

This week in the Big Sky, several conference matchups highlight the schedule. Weber State and Southern Utah will battle in Cedar City, while Sacramento State travels to Idaho State. Also, Montana State hosts North Dakota, and Montana hosts Northern Colorado.

Eastern Washington travels to UC-Davis, and Northern Arizona hosts Cal Poly.
