SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — President Barack Obama has nominated a Utah Supreme Court justice to serve as a federal judge in Utah. The White House announced the selection of Utah state Justice Jill Parrish yesterday afternoon. Parrish is one of two women serving on the state's five-member Supreme Court.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney will help fellow Republican Mia Love in her race for Congress. The Salt Lake Tribune reports Romney will host a fundraiser and rally for Love on Oct. 8 at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. Love, the former mayor of Saratoga Springs, is running to replace outgoing Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson in the 4th Congressional District.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An 83-year-old Utah man has pleaded guilty to murder in the death of his stepdaughter in southern Utah in July. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Nathan Zimmerman acknowledged as part of a plea deal he accepted this week that he fatally shot his stepdaughter, 57-year-old Janet Goode. It's not clear what his motive was. Zimmerman faces 15 years to life in prison.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — State transportation officials have lifted restrictions on commercial trucks using a stretch of Interstate 15 still under repair between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. A Transportation department spokeswoman says all lanes could be repaired by this weekend. Northbound big-rig trucks were detoured off I-15 at times for more than a week to a route adding 50 miles and several hours to their Nevada-to-Utah trip.
