EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom. In a historic referendum, Scottish voters have decided 55 percent to 45 percent against independence. The decision has prevented a rupture of a 307-year union with England, and brings a huge sigh of relief to the British political establishment.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Hundreds of Muslims in a Sydney suburb are protesting Thursday's police raids that authorities say thwarted a plot by the group Islamic State to carry out random beheadings in the city. The protesters are accusing the government of exploiting public fear in an effort to get contentious counterterrorism laws through Parliament. But Prime Minister Tony Abbott is defending the raids against accusations of overkill. Fifteen suspects were detained by police Thursday, but nine were freed before the day was over.
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — State police in northeastern Pennsylvania are searching dense, swampy woodland, trying to flush the man suspected of shoot to death a trooper and wounding another. Police say they are eliminating possible hiding places for 31-year-old Eric Frein (freen), including hunting cabins, campsites and other occasional residences in the Pocono Mountains. An intense late-night search Thursday concentrated on the area around Frein's parents' home.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A doctor who was convicted of murder after his wife was found drugged and dead in the bathtub of their Utah home will be sentenced Friday. Prosecutors say Martin MacNeill gave his wife drugs following cosmetic surgery then left her to drown in 2007 so he could begin a new life with his mistress. The 58-year-old doctor could face 15 years to life on the murder charge and another one to 15 years on an obstruction of justice conviction.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A search will continue Friday for a Central Texas sheriff's deputy whose patrol car was found swamped by floodwaters minutes after she radioed for help. The search for the deputy was suspended overnight because of the storms, which are remnants of Hurricane Odile (oh-DEEL'). Authorities in Travis County say the deputy had been checking low-water crossings.
