WEED, Calif. (AP) — A supervisor for the Eldorado National Forest tells the Sacramento Bee that an out-of-control wildfire in Northern California has brought significant losses of public and private timberland and watershed territory. The big blaze, east of Sacramento, has burned nearly 44 square miles of trees and brush and is threatening more than 2,000 homes.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is a step closer to what he wants -- authority for the U.S. to train and arm Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State extremists. The Republican-controlled House today voted 273-156 in favor of the administration's plan. Obama is again stressing that American forces "do not and will not have a combat mission" in the struggle against the militants in Iraq or Syria. Senate approval is expected Thursday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — School police departments across the country are taking advantage of free military surplus gear, stocking up on mine resistant armored vehicles and scores of M16 rifles. At least 26 school districts have participated in the Pentagon's surplus program. But amid increasing criticism of police militarization, some districts are now saying they'll return some of the equipment.
TORONTO (AP) — Rob Ford's doctor says Toronto's embattled mayor has a rare and difficult cancer that'll require aggressive chemotherapy. Dr. Zane Cohen says it's a malignant liposarcoma. Ford has been hospitalized for a week with a tumor in his abdomen. The doctor says Ford's cancer makes up only about one percent of all cancers but says he's optimistic about his treatment.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals say they're cooperating with the investigation into allegations of assault involving one of the NFL team's players. Running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested today on aggravated assault charges in connection with two altercations at his home in July involving a woman and their 18-month-old child. The Cardinals say they have deactivated Dwyer.
