HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's auditor general says his office will expand an audit of the Department of Education to look into the agency's oversight of advisers and consultants.
Wednesday's announcement by Auditor General Eugene DePasquale comes after a newspaper report that found the department had little work product to show for the 14 months it employed former secretary Ron Tomalis as a special adviser on higher education.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in July that records of Tomalis' work schedule, phone calls and emails showed little activity. Department officials maintain that Tomalis worked 40 hours a week. Tomalis had kept his $140,000-a-year salary he earned as secretary before resigning the adviser's post last month.
Tomalis served Gov. Tom Corbett a little over two years as education secretary. The audit will be completed in 2015.
