BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — The manhunt is intensifying for the person or persons who ambushed two Pennsylvania state troopers outside their barracks last night, killing one and wounding the other. Cpl. Bryon Dickson was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass was critically wounded in the shooting outside the Blooming Grove barracks east of Scranton.
CAIRO (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says almost every country in the world has an ability to play some kind of role in the fight against the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. During a visit to Cairo on Saturday, Kerry said "as an intellectual and cultural capital to the Muslim world," Egypt has a "critical role" to play in denouncing the militant group's harsh ideology.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Islamic State group is grabbing the attention now but American officials say another band of extremists in Syria — a mix of militants from Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Europe — poses a more direct and imminent threat to the United States. And the officials say they're working with Yemeni bomb-makers to target U.S. aviation.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of firefighters are battling to contain a growing wildfire in Southern California -- southeast of Los Angeles. The blaze, which has forced people to flee about 30 homes near the Cleveland National Forest, has burned through about 2 ½ square miles of dry canyon brush and is only about 10 percent contained. Heat and smoke advisories are in effect.
HOUSTON (AP) — Pianist and composer Joe Sample is dead. Sample, a founding member of the genre-crossing Jazz Crusaders who helped pioneer the electronic jazz-funk fusion style, was 75. His manager says Sample died of complications due to lung cancer last evening at a Houston hospital. His family was at his bedside.
