SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of firefighters are battling both flames and triple-digit temperatures as they try to contain a wildfire in Southern California. The fire has forced people to flee about 30 homes near the Cleveland National Forest. It's burned through about 2 ½ square miles of dry canyon brush and is only about 10 percent contained. Heat and smoke advisories are in effect for the area, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 105 degrees between today and Tuesday.

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — Law enforcement officials from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey have descended on the Pocono Mountains to search for the killer of a Pennsylvania state trooper. Another trooper was critically wounded in last night's shooting at a state police barracks east of Scranton. State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan says authorities are talking to hundreds of people. He says a man who was identified as a "person of interest" is not a suspect.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a girl in her early teens suffered life-threatening injuries when she fell more than 40 feet off a cliff at a popular hiking and climbing spot in Oregon. Fire and rescue crews arrived minutes after receiving reports last night that the girl had gone over the edge at Rocky Butte and set up a high-angle rope rescue system. They treated the girl and carried her in a litter one-third of a mile to an ambulance.

HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas prosecutor says a grand jury decided to back a child abuse charge against Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson after it spent several weeks reviewing evidence. Peterson is accused of injuring his son by spanking him with a wooden switch. Montgomery County prosecutor Phil Grant says the jurors felt Peterson went too far in disciplining the boy after they looked at his injuries. Peterson was booked and released from a Houston-area jail earlier today.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The fired director of Ohio State's celebrated marching band has conducted the alumni band for its annual game-day appearance at Ohio Stadium. Jonathan Waters was among the alumni who marched into the stadium today for the Buckeyes' game against Kent State. Waters was fired in July after a university investigation concluded he knew about but didn't stop a "sexualized culture" within the band, known for its elaborate halftime shows.
