WASHINGTON (AP) — As President Barack Obama prepares to outline his strategy against the Islamic State group tonight in a speech to the American people, administration officials are still working to win the support of reluctant lawmakers for part of Obama's plan. Republicans in the House aren't yet supporting Obama's request for approval to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels, and the request wasn't included in a spending bill that the House is supposed to vote on tomorrow.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's Justice Ministry says police have charged an officer who was filmed beating a Palestinian-American teenager during a violent protest in July. The teenager (Tariq Abu Khdeir), who lives in Tampa, Florida, was beaten at an east Jerusalem protest that followed the gruesome death of his cousin. Israel said the 15 year old was "taking an active part in the riot" -- but the teen denied any wrongdoing. His 16-year-old cousin had been burned to death by Israeli extremists in revenge for the killings of three Israeli teens in the West Bank. Their deaths set off a chain of events that led to the Gaza war.
LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a South Carolina man has confessed to killing his five children, and then dumping their bodies wrapped in trash bags along a rural road in Alabama. Timothy Jones will be charged with five counts of murder. Officials believe he acted alone. Jones was stopped at a traffic checkpoint in Mississippi on Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, but it would be another three days before he led authorities to the bodies of his children.
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — It's a rare display of unity among Britain's three major political parties. The leaders of all three parties -- including Prime Minister David Cameron -- went to Scotland today, to urge voters to reject a proposal for Scotland to break apart from Britain. The referendum will be held next week, and recent polls indicate the two sides are neck-and-neck.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sheriff's officials have reported the first death linked to last month's magnitude-6.0 earthquake in California's wine country. The Napa County Sheriff's Office says 65-year-old Laurie Anne Thompson was struck in the head by a television while at her Napa home during the Aug. 24 quake. She did not go to the hospital until the next day when she felt dizzy and experienced a decline in mental function. Sheriff's officials say she died of a hemorrhage.
