WASHINGTON (AP) — An aide to House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) says the Ohio Republican expressed support for efforts to increase the effectiveness of the Iraqi security forces and for equipping the moderate Syrian opposition in a meeting with President Barack Obama this afternoon. The president is preparing to address the nation tomorrow night on his plans for taking on the Islamic State extremists who have seized territory in Iraq and Syria.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans controlling the House have unveiled a short-term spending bill that would keep the government open into mid-December and provide $88 million to battle the Ebola outbreak. The spending measure will also extend the authority of the Export-Import Bank to continue helping foreign buyers purchase U.S. exports. That issue has divided Republicans, with some eager to help American businesses while others considering it government interference in the marketplace.

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says seeing video of Ray Rice knocking out his then-fiancee in an elevator was so graphic that the league needed to increase its suspension from two games to indefinite. The Baltimore Ravens cut the running back yesterday. But Janay Palmer, who has since married Rice, calls the situation "horrible" and says the punishment is forcing the couple to relive a moment they both regret.

CAMDEN, Ala. (AP) — Police expect to file additional charges against a man suspected of killing his five children in South Carolina and then driving to Alabama, where the bodies were dumped on a dirt road. Right now Timothy Ray Jones has been charged with unlawful neglect by a legal custodian. He's in jail in Mississippi, where authorities say he fled after allegedly killing his children. Authorities say Jones led police to the bodies, which were wrapped in individual plastic bags.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal appeals court has refused to halt the execution of a Missouri inmate, who's scheduled to be put to death just after midnight local time. Earl Ringo Jr. was convicted of killing two people while robbing a Columbia, Missouri restaurant in 1998. The appeal questioned Missouri's use of the sedative midazolam (mih-DAY'-zoh-lam) before executions, claiming it could dull the inmate's senses, leaving him potentially unable to express any pain.
