WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says "almost every single county on Earth has a role to play in eliminating" the threat posed by the Islamic State extremist group. He's predicting nations will build an enduring coalition to defeat the militants. The U.S. has launched nearly 150 airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq. A Central Command spokesman says the latest round may have killed as many as 70 fighters.
PHOENIX (AP) — Two people have died in flooding in the Phoenix area as the nation's southwestern section is being hit by the remnants of Hurricane Norbert. One who perished was a woman who was swept away in her car by rushing water. In addition, a 76-year-old woman drowned after getting out of her vehicle in floodwaters. Storms also hit Nevada, where 190 people from an Indian reservation were evacuated.
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service is helping Home Depot investigate a data breach of its payment systems. The breach could turn out to be one of the biggest in history. Home Depot did not say how many cards might be affected, but the largest U.S. home improvement chain did say its investigation goes as far back as April.
SINTON, Texas (AP) — Investigators say a man was shot dead after his pickup truck slammed into the front entrance of a South Texas sheriff's office and he opened fire. The incident happened Monday morning at the San Patricio County sheriff's office in Sinton, 18 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. Sheriff Leroy Moody says the truck's driver fired at least four shots at the building with a .45-caliber pistol before a deputy fatally shot him.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mel Brooks has given an extra finger to Hollywood. The writer, producer and actor responsible for the classic movie comedies "The Producers," ''Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein," sank his hands and feet into cement in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Monday. The 88-year-old Brooks wore a fake sixth finger on his left hand. He says he did it so tourists might say: "Look, Mel Brooks has six fingers on his left hand!'"
