WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A city official says that British lawmaker Jim Dobbin has died in a hospital in northern Poland during a visit organized by the Council of Europe.

The 73-year-old Dobbin died Saturday night in Slupsk. He was taken to the hospital from his hotel room after feeling ill.

Dawid Zielkowski, spokesman for the city of Slupsk, said Monday that Dobbin was a member of a Council of Europe delegation on a visit in recognition of the city's promotion of European values. Dobbin took part in celebrations on Saturday.

A microbiologist, Dobbin had been Labour Party member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton, in northwestern England, since 1997.
