FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A spokesman at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Fort Wayne says it has filled the needed clinical jobs so it can reopen its four-bed intensive care unit.
VA Northern Indiana Health Care System Michael Brady tells The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/1qyaaGn ) the ICU will be ready for use in the next 60 days. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs suspended the medical center's inpatient services and its ICU in October 2012 because of lapses in care, insufficient staffing and leadership shortcomings. All other inpatient services returned in the year after the suspension.
The medical center has been referring ICU patients to non-VA hospitals during the suspension.
The ICU will be a Level 4 unit, meaning it will treat less-complex patients who typically require hospital stays of less than 72 hours.
