INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service has decided to remove a dam at a drained lake in the Carson Range above Lake Tahoe's northeast shore and to restore wetlands at the site.
Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson of the agency's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit says removal of Incline Lake's dam will address public safety concerns and improve wetland habitat while providing recreational opportunities.
In 2009, the Forest Service purchased a 777-acre parcel around Incline Lake, located along the Mount Rose Highway in Washoe County above Incline Village.
The sellers drained the lake before the acquisition and it won't be refilled.
The aging dam was designated a high-hazard facility due to development downstream along Third Creek.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife sought to keep the dam and refill the lake as a fishery.
